National beading week  28th July to 4th August 2018

This fantastic event has gained momentum and is now International Beading Week, which is great news! The annual event was created by The Bead Workers Guild with the aim of encouraging more people into this wonderful craft and to help small bead companies, like ourselves, in a quieter time of the beading calendar.

It is a fantastic time to try out beading whether you’re a complete beginner or already bead. The Beading Week website is packed full of great projects kindly donated by many great designers from around the world to give you inspiration and new things to try.

I filmed a short Instagram TV vlog about National Beading week which you can also see here.

I had a go at the Star Anise Pendant by Erika Sandos aka The Storytelling Jeweller. I just thought it was stunning. We do not stock the exact beads needed for this project, however I got my thinking cap on and made what I thought would be appropriate substitutes and they worked well. I used Diamond twin beads, delica beads, size 13 Czech glass seed beads and 3mm Czech glass faceted beads.

What was great about this design and many of the patterns available on their website currently is that have loads of great step by step diagrams. I’d class myself as an advanced beader and I think this pattern would suit someone who’s at an intermediate level, however the clear diagrams and instructions make this project easy to follow, so as long as you felt confident with your beading tension and following patterns you shouldn’t have any problems. I’m a very visual learner so the diagrams were great for me. I barely glanced at the written instruction the whole way through.

Another pattern that caught my eye was Heather Kingsley- Heath’s  pattern Flora which is ideal for beginners and one that would be perfect to try at our Bead & Biscuit Event for Beading Week.

This pattern again has great visual instructions and creates pretty flower designs in size 11 seed beads. They’re a great way to get into beading, there’s a little structure to them and you can really get creative with your colour choices. Our size 11 seed bead mixes have been great for making multi-coloured flowers. They would make fantastic earrings, or pendants and could be the perfect way to start your bead weaving journey.

BEAD & BISCUIT

Sat 5th August we are hosting a bead and biscuit event. This is a casual social event bringing beaders together, where we’ll have a beading session. Just bring along a project and have a cup of tea, cake and have a natter with like minded people. Whether you’ve been a beader for years or just starting out everyone is welcome. We’re going to have a selection of Homemade cakes available for sale which will raise funds for the Cats Protection, a charity dear to all our hearts. I will also be on hand to answer questions about beading and give anyone a helping hand if anyone gets stuck with their patterns.

You can find our facebook event here.

If you’re not sure where to start have a look at all the patterns available on the Beading Week website (there’s loads, I’ve only mentioned 2), they have full lists of materials needed to make them. Alternatively we have several beading kits and  patterns available for beginners and intermediate beaders. We will also have 10% discount on all our kits and patterns for National Beading week.

These are my top beading kit for beginners.

  1. I was planning on popping in for beading and a biscuit, but I’ve just realised that I’m away that weekend! I must come by for a class again soon, will you be running any advanced beadweaving classes in the autumn?

    1. Hi Wendy, I hope you have a lovely holiday! We’re hoping to have a few new classes before Christmas, I’m sure they’ll be some beading ones too & definitely in the new year as well!
